What did I think?
I’m not that fond of short stories. I enjoy having something to sink my teeth into. However, I had to try this collection because, well, it’s by Charlaine Harris and I’m a teeny bit obsessed with the world she created in The Sookie Stackhouse Series – on which they based the TV show True Blood.
Small Kingdoms and other stories saw high school principal, Anne, sorting out a variety of school and personal issues in a way that very few people could. You see Anne had a previous life where weapons training and martial arts were second nature but people could…disappear. She’s thrown herself into making her school the best it can be but not always in ways that you’d hope.
Anne is an interesting main protagonist but the stories have a couple of good backups, too. Anne’s boyfriend, Holt, who had a similar background to Anne, and their old boss, David Angola.
It’s a short book, just over 150 pages, and it was easy to get through – not a chore at all. I do wish it had been a novel. I definitely could read a whole book about Anne and her mega backstory! 🙂
